Abstract
Introduction
Cartilage damage is a common cause of joint pain and disability. Familiarity with common injury patterns and associated terminology is critical for appropriate treatment and communication.
Objectives
The goal of this narrative review is to describe the imaging features of cartilage damage and highlight the correlation with arthroscopic observation.
Methods
A systematic literature search via PubMed was performed using the search terms “Imaging, cartilage, damage, arthroscopy.” Abstracts were reviewed for relevance and appropriateness. Reviews and meta-analyses from recent years were used to identify additional useful resources.
Results
Recent original research studies and systematic reviews were utilized to construct an updated review of imaging findings and clinically useful terminology.
Conclusions
An understating of injury patterns and terminology bridging the arthroscopic and radiologic literature is an important basis of knowledge for clinical providers working in the realm of cartilage repair and joint preservation.
