Abstract
Soil acidification process in aerated soils is a consequence of: (1) production of
various acids in the soil, (2) the effect of ion uptake of biota, (3) nitrogen inputs and (4) the
addition of dissolved strong acids. The soils formed by acidolysis process are Umbric Podzols,
Umbric – entic Podzols, Haplic Umbrisols – Dystric Cambisol and Dystric Fluvisols.
In the case of presence of an argic horizon with alternating aerobic and anaerobic
conditions the main process is ferrolysis. During wet periods, iron oxides undergo reduction and
in aerobic conditions with Fe2+ oxidation, it will be generating acid soils, like Stagni – albic
Luvisols.
