We argue that these activities established the Bayt al-Hikma as a kind of academy. From al-Khwarizumi's Algebra, we claim that the early Abbasid dynasty implemented writing and education as a policy to develop scribes and officials who could perform complex calculations such as inheritance, legacies, partition and surveying. And by citing the primary literature, Algebra and Fihrist, we argue that the Bayt al-Hikma played a role as an academic institution. Abstract
