Abstract

This paper presents the development of an inspection-class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that can be employed to aid in the reduction of operational and maintenance (O&M) costs of offshore renewable energy systems. The estimated costs for the offshore renewables sectors are presented and accessibility challenges to the offshore structures, specifically off the coast of Ireland, are discussed. One solution is put forward to use a very capable ROV, operated by a two-man team, to inspect the structures, thus reducing the need of large vessels with large crews to carry out routine inspection. The design methodology is discussed, focusing on a number of subsystems namely, shape, thrusters, power, communications and equipment, enclosures, navigational sensor suite and control system. The challenges encountered during the design of the ROV are given with market challenges, and the ROV solutions also discussed. Finally, the future work required for the completion of the ROV is presented.
