Abstract
Validation tests of large LNG trains in full electric configuration or gas turbine with starter helper, require typically a full load combined test of the electrical systems (Motor + Drive + Transformer) in back-to-back arrangement with a load machine. This type of test is complex, expensive and time consuming. For systems using an induction machine fed by a VSI converter, the load test is replaced by an alternative heating method and a rotor heating test before carrying out the string testing of the entire train. The first part of this paper describes the testing package combining alternative method, and rotor heating tests. The second part of the paper presents the validation of this testing package on a starter/helper train operating with the largest 2-pole induction motor, delivered to any customer anywhere the world, fed by a VSI drive at 20MW- 3600rpm, as well as the associated financial and time savings. Finally, the last part focuses on the alternative heating and rotor heating tests results for the largest 2-pole induction motor demonstrator operating at 80MW-4000rpm.
