Abstract

The SAFENET (survivable adaptable fiber optic embedded network) standards which are being developed for use in US Navy computer-based systems, are described. There are two SAFENET standards. SAFENET I is based on the IEEE 802.5 LAN standard, while SAFENET II is based on the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI). The SAFENET physical topology is based on a dual counter-rotating ring architecture which provides many survivability features.
