Abstract
Internal combustion engines play a key role in transportation and power generation sectors in which diesel engines occupy a prominent status. Reduction of exhaust emission in diesel engines is a difficult and challenging task without compromising the engine performance. Various parameters like injection timing, compression ratio, and injection pressure can be varied in order to attain the desired performance and emission results. This study involves the adjustment of both injection timing and compression ratio for attaining optimized performance and emission characteristics. Injection timing was advanced by 2° and retarded by 3° from the standard spill setting of 23° bTDC. Reduction of compression ratio was carried out from standard setting of 18 to 17 by a specially designed tilting block arrangement. Experiments were carried out on varying the above parameters depicted optimum results of better performance and reduced emissions.
