Abstract

Current indigenous women’s cinema contains strong and powerful proposals that are transforming the media and film landscape in Quebec. To highlight the presence of indigenous women directors and to recognize their growing contribution to Quebec cinema, we present and comment on the remarks made by Mohawk director Tracey Deer in a public interview conducted in October 2017 at the Université de Montréal. closing of the conference ”” Je suis île “/” I Am Turtle ”“. Organized by Marie-Eve Bradette, Julie Graff, Gabrielle Marcoux, Alexia Pinto Ferretti and Louise Vigneault, this conference questioned the place of ”artistic representations, cultural and indigenous identity in the urban space”. In this interview, Deer reflects on her journey as a Mohawk woman and director of Kahnawà: ke and discusses her thoughts on film and television, different audiences for her creations, and avenues that she wishes to open.
