Sound Reproduction by Concatenative Synthesis for Japanese Traditional Music Box

Abstract

In this paper, we propose and evaluate a method to reproduce sounds for a Japanese traditional music box called 'shikokin'. In order to play 'shikokin', a rolled music score is required. It is however difficult to flexibly modify the score, once the score is made. To solve this problem, we reproduce sounds for 'shikokin' by a concatenative synthesis. By utilizing the proposed method, it is possible to easily simulate sounds of 'shikokin' before making the score. We also confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method by an objective experiment with F0 and a subjective experiment based on Scheffe method.
