Engineering students' perception and relevant aspects on Foreign Language Anxiety

Abstract

The paper is aimed to investigate the anxiety-provoking causes and effects to language learning success amongst engineering students as learners of English as a foreign language in Thailand. The students in different engineering areas of study who are enrolling in an English conversation course at a university in Thailand participate in the research study. The dapted version of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) is used to measure the extent to which the students feel anxious in certain English classrooms. Additionally, the anxiety of students in relation to a range of factors, that is, gender, experience of speaking English with foreigners and duration of English learning is investigated. Interviews to study in-class activities and other related factors that possibly induce the anxiety amongst the group of students are conducted as well.
