Abstract

Organizational dynamics are typically characterized by extended periods of stability as well as sudden bursts of radical transformation. This pattern has been observed across systems and across levels. Interestingly, many network models also display a similar pattern: Following a period of incremental change, there is often a critical point at which network properties undergo a dramatic qualitative shift. In this paper, I explore the possibility that such similarities between the behaviors of organizations and network models are not coincidental. In particular, I examine whether network theory can explain some of the mechanisms behind sudden and radical organizational transformation, which has been discussed in the organization literature through the lens of punctuated equilibrium.
