Abstract

The use of inter-vehicle communication (IVC) is considered an integral part of future intelligent transportation systems. Although several communication protocols have been proposed, the problems of interference have largely been ignored. In particular, the problem of interference from vehicles in oncoming lanes has not been investigated before. We examine the problem of interference from vehicles in oncoming lanes and show that the worst case presents a level of interference which must be avoided. The results in this paper are confirmed by both theoretic modeling and computer simulation using a Rician fading model in the millimeter wave band. The use of directional or beam antennas, coupled with separating the frequency band into forward transmit/reverse receive, and reverse transmit/forward receive is suggested as the solution to the problems of interference from oncoming vehicles.
