Abstract

The purpose of the article is to commemorate the late Venerable Bishop Boļeslavs Sloskāns, to examine and analyse some of his most important practices and activities in service, as well as the significance of his spiritual legacy and works in the context of the succession of the persecuted church and the Latvian state. These aspects are considered in connection with the intrusion of a foreign power into the church, subjecting it to destruction, the position of the clergy in relations with the power in the process of sovietisation of the church, providing support to the faithful, earning recognition of the entire nation with their works. Only a church that is secure and strong in its identity can offer its balanced and reasonable vision of our shared values, which a democratic modern society and the state expect from it. In periods of upheavals, it is the power of the personality’s authority, its spiritual richness and maturity that is decisive in the defense of human dignity and democratic values.
