Abstract
The procedure proposed works on the basis of a merit function of 4th degree and is used for the optimization of the Seidel image errors of a system composed of thin lenses by means of lens bendings. Between the thin lenses air spaces may exist. All solutions which lie within the permissible intervals of bending are taken into consideration when the sums and the corresponding surface contributions of the Seidel image errors are situated below a limit that may be selected at will.
