Abstract
Power quality (PQ) is becoming an increasing concern with the extensive use of nonlinear and time varying devices that lead to distortion of current and voltage waveforms. Implementation of various standards and guidelines such as IEEE-519 gradually encouraged both utility and customers to share their responsibilities and to maintain PQ within the acceptable limits. Harmonic distortions are considered one of the most significant reasons for PQ problems due to massive increase of nonlinear and power electronics loads. This paper presents a preliminary survey to determine the harmonics injected by the different commonly used loads that are existed in the low voltage secondary distribution system. The effect of harmonics distortion is also outlined. The experimental results reveal the importance of harmonics related appropriate regulation and policy to be recommended by the concern power authority to maintain harmonics within the permissible limit.
