Abstract
The usage of renewable energy is getting on its hike and its implications were seen in all the agendas, the desalination units is having its own advancements with varied collaborations of all the forms of renewable energy, the study is carried with a single stage basin type solar still, whose performance is evaluated in idle mode and in along with the implication of single and a series flat plate collector respectively. We ignited our study in Gandhigram, Tamilnadu located in 10.2866° N, 77.9319° E, the major parameters studied were the quantity of the distillate obtained and the overall efficiency of the distillation units. The basic like temperature of the still, illuminated solar radiation were recorded and the same were logged on to a logger, the operation of the solar still on augmentation with the flat plate collector in single and series mode is carried from 10.00a.m to 5.00 p.m in order to check the overall performance in reference to the change in all natural parameters. On working it was found that the efficiency of conventional solar still is 23% and the respected distillate output is found to be only 2.1 l/day, on the second case the still combined with single flat plate collector has an distilled water output of 4.75 Kg/day which is 126% higher than the conventional type. Looking over the third case the solar still combined with series flat plate collector has a water output of about 6.5 Kg/day. And finally it was concluded that if a solar still and a series flat plate collector is made to operate together the output obtained will be of higher order.
