Abstract

Akagi's “Generalized Theory of the Instantaneous Reactive Power in Three-Phase Circuits,” commonly known as the p-q theory, is a useful tool for controlling active power filters when analysing three-phase power systems for harmonics, reactive power, and load unbalance issues. The voltage and current waveforms of the power systems are shown to be degrading steadily as a result of the heavy use of power converters and other non-linear loads in industry and by consumers in general. In order to solve all of these issues and enhance power quality, Akagi's p-q theory was proposed in 1983. It uses the shunt active power filter compensation approach to reduce the generation of unneeded reactive power, which has negative consequences on power systems. In this method, we inject reactive power that counters the undesirable reactive power by utilizing a compensator. Utilizing p-q theory, the reactive power amount is calculated.
