Abstract

The use of low-cost, widely available, biometric sensors has skyrocketed over the past few years, enabling anyone to measure how their physiological signals change as they go about their daily lives. We use these sensors to understand software development activities, however, their use is not straightforward, nor is it easy. In this paper, we introduce some common sensors, along with some difficulties we encountered in using them in our experiments as well as how we worked past them. We call on everyone in our community to share best practices in sensor application and analysis in order to enable our field to grow as quickly as possible while producing robust, reliable results.
