Abstract
A general description of the internal and external lighting systems is presented. The most appropriate light source for illumination of the interior of spacecraft is the fluorescent lamp. The primary approach and design criteria followed in the development and implementation of a luminaire are discussed, and an overview of the primary systems is given. In particular, the general illumination within the working and living areas should provide a medium level intensity of white light and utilize supplemental task lighting where functionally required. The luminaire should cover the entire work area with a uniform diffuse intensity. On most spacecraft, a variety of lighting systems are utilized to provide artificial illumination of the exterior visual scene during night side operations. These luminaires provide lighting for the following: extravehicular activity, acquisition tracking, rendezvous, berthing and docking operations.<>
