This chapter introduces the physics of MRI, its use in lung imaging, and more specifically, the methods that are used for the detection of regional distributions of inhaled particles. The most common implementation of MRI is based on imaging of hydrogen atoms (<sup>1</sup>H) in water. The regional deposition of aerosol particles can be measured by the perturbation of the acquired <sup>1</sup>H signals via labeling of the aerosol with contrast agents.
