The closer both processes are in time, the less accessible the RNA sequence is between the RNA polymerase and ribosome. This temporal coupling has important consequences for gene regulation. Biochemical and structural studies have detailed several complexes between the RNA polymerase and ribosome. The in vivo relevance of this physical coupling has not been formally demonstrated. Abstract

In bacteria, transcription and translation take place in the same cellular compartment.
