Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases. This chronic relapsing disorder affects up to 2% of the United States population. Clinical diagnosis is often made by careful examination of skin lesions. A genetic predisposition exists as 30% of patients report a family member with the disease. Although the pathogenesis remains unclear, intense research has led to new advances in the understanding and treatment of this common affliction of the skin.
Psychiatrists should be able to identify classic psoriatic skin lesions, and exacerbating agents such as the commonly used drug, Lithium. Psoriasis can be emotionally, physically, and economically disabling, resulting in social isolation and embarrassment over one's physical appearance. The clinical features, complications, and treatment of psoriasis will be discussed.
