JÓVENES CON INTENCIÓN DE SALIR. CULTURA DE LA MIGRACIÓN EN ESTUDIANTES DE YUCATÁN

A partir de una encuesta representativa, aplicada a 1 243 alumnos de primaria, secundaria y preparatoria en el estado de Yucatán, México, en 2011, este artículo presenta resultados que perfilan la complejidad y multiplicidad de factores que intervienen en la conformación de lo que suele entenderse por “cultura de la migración”. Complementados con información cualitativa provenientes de entrevistas, los datos muestran que esta cultura no sólo constituye un terreno dinámico y en permanente disputa en el que fuerzas contrarias se confrontan para consolidar el arraigo comunitario o alentar las decisiones migratorias, sino que conforma un ámbito altamente sensible a la edad y sexo de los jóvenes, a su escolaridad, a las redes sociales de las que participan, el propio referente familiar, así como a diversas fuentes de información que influyen para afianzar distintas representaciones de los destinos migratorios.

Based on a representative survey given in 2011 to 1243 primary, secondary, and high school students in the state of Yucatán, Mexico, this paper presents results that provide a profile of the complexity and multiplicity of factors involved in forming what is generally understood as “the culture of migration.” Supplemented with qualitative information from interviews, the data show that this culture is not only a dynamic field and constantly debated by opposing forces who are confronted to consolidate community roots or promote migration decisions, but also that this culture is highly dependent on the age and sex of youth, their education, social networks in which they participate, as well as on diverse sources of information that influence the establishment of diverse representations of migratory destinations.
