Confluence of “Beelief “Apitherapy and Green Psychology: Recognizing Sorsogon Inputs towards Diversification and Value Addition Initiatives
Both conventional and complementary medicine practitioners apparently believe that the causes and cures for the current ecological problems are to be found in the hearts and minds of human beings. This study examined the confluence between the Sorsoguenos passionate love for mother-nature and the contention that the beehive is the best “Pharmacy” and “Clinic” one could ever find. Utilizing the descriptive survey method, a total of 91 respondents in the province of Sorsogon were interviewed on their beliefs in the Apitherapy practice against Green Psychology. The use of field notes became very helpful in demonstrating the extent of effectiveness of utilizing various bee products, ease of its use and satisfaction criteria as measured in a 5-point Likert rating scale. It was concluded that the Sorsoguenos, people of Sorsogon, consider Apitherapy as a natural medicinal alternative which promotes both internal (psychological) and external (environmental) healing. The most common bee products used Apitherapy practice include, honey which is believed to be a very effective treatment for cough and asthma; propolis for allergies and as anti-inflammatory agent; and bee pollen for post-menopausal symptoms and insomnia. Kendall’s W measure of agreement or concordance disclosed a high degree of acceptability on the use of the common bee products for Apitherapy practice in Sorsogon. It is believed that Apitherapy practice would promote restoration of mother-nature while it provides monetary and healthy benefits. The study reveals a positive confluence between the two variables. It implies that Sorsogue n os believe on the significant role of bees for mankind and that humans are needed by the bees for conservation and biodiversity. This further provides for creative experimentation on value adding as it could lead to more diversified and increased income for beekeepers and non-beekeepers. Keywords - Apitherapy, green psychology, beekeeping, diversification, value adding, ecology, descriptive design, Philippines
