The counting, sizing and sampling of Aitken nuclei in gas-cooled reactors
Methods of counting and sizing Aitken nuclei are described and their application to pressurized gas-cooled reactors discussed. It is concluded that the most satisfactory instrument at present available for determining concentrations of Aitken nuclei in reactors is the Nolan-Pollak counter. A method is given of estimating the percentage release of gas-borne particulate fission products through a specified leak by measuring the rate of disappearance of particles by deposition in the reactor. A description is given of a simple pressurized sampling arrangement for obtaining samples of particles from reactors in a form suitable for electron microscopy.
The use of the Nolan-Pollak counter is further considered as a means of conducting ‘in place’ tests of high efficiency filter installations and it is concluded that the counter will be of considerable value in this application.
