Monkeypox: from tropical rain forest to urban jungle and beyond
In July this year, monkeypox was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO), which indicates that “the outbreak is serious, sudden, unusual, or unexpected;that it poses a public health risk beyond the affected countries’ borders and that it may require an urgent international response”.1 This is the seventh PHEIC since 2007. The others included H1N1 influenza, Ebola (West African and DRC), poliomyelitis, and more recently, Zika and COVID-19. This historical journey highlights how viruses and the diseases they cause may emerge, adapt and change over time, discusses current monkeypox treatment strategies and alludes to the relevance of One Health in zoonotic diseases.
