It explains why the field of serious sport represented a special area of the German unification process, as West German sport politicians hoped to benefit from East German personal potential and scientific knowledge. At the same time, the groundbreaking reform of the East German constitution since 1990 also led to a democratization of the sports system that shaped society in the “new Bundesländer”.
