This paper takes $\\pm 800\\mathrm{kV}$ Yibin-Jinhua UHVDC transmission line as example evaluating the performance of the surge arrester based on the lightning simulation. The protective performance of the arrester for two typical towers under single return stroke are calculated and analyzed. The detour lightning resistance level with and without the lighting arrester is compared, and the influence of the tower wave impedance and the grounding resistance is obtained. The simulation results show that with the installation of the arrester, the detour lightning resistance level of the UHVDC transmission lines can be significantly improved. The tower wave impedance has little effect on the detour lightning resistance level which can be ignored.
