People of the ARA

В статье рассматривается, как во время голода начала 1920-х годов в советской России работали сотрудники Американской администрации помощи (АРА), искренне желавших спасти жизни бедствующих россиян, роль директора Русской миссии АРА У. Хаскелла в успешной работе этой организации. Гуманитарная деятельность американцев была сопряжена с определенными объективными и субъективными трудностями: имели место недоразумения и конфликты с властями регионов, где работали аровцы. Не принимая большевистский режим, американцы, работавшие в России, все же находили общий язык с ее представителями в интересах спасения людей от голода, а руководство миссии АРА в Москве пыталось наладить экономические связи между Россией и США This paper examines the work of the American Relief Administration (ARA) in Soviet Russia during the famine in the early 1920s. The organisation's employees were genuinely committed to saving the lives of the Russian people in distress. The study also explores the role of William N. Haskell, Director of the ARA Russian Mission, in the successful organization of the relief efforts. The American humanitarian aid encountered several objective and subjective obstacles, mostly connected to clashes with the Soviet authorities in the regions where the ARA was active. While rejecting the Bolshevik regime, American relief workers in Russia did find cooperate with the authorities to save people from starvation while the APA mission leadership in Moscow tried to establish economic ties between the USA and Russia.
