Insomnia is generally characterized by subjective reports of difficulty obtaining adequate sleep accompanied by daytime impairment. This review provides a brief overview of the classification, epidemiology, etiology, and models of the development of adult insomnia. The contemporary evidence base for cognitive behavioral therapy in insomnia is then reviewed, with a focus on sleep and daytime functioning.
