He declares that he wrote this play in reaction to the brutal executions of African rebels after the nearly successful slave revolt in the Dutch colony of Berbice. The plot, however, centers around the enslavement of the Mexicans by Hernán Cortés in the early sixteenth century. Following Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s notion of ‘silencing’ the past (1995), this article explores the absence of the Dutch Atlantic in Monzongo. Al meer dan een eeuw wordt het Tijdschrift voor Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde uitgegeven door de Maatschappij der Nederlandse letterkunde te Leiden. TNTL richt zich op de historische neerlandistiek in de ruimste zin. Men vindt er artikelen over historische taalkunde (inclusief lexicografie) en diachrone aspecten van taalvariatie in het (hedendaagse) Nederlands, alsmede over de letterkunde vanaf de Middeleeuwen tot het einde van de twintigste eeuw. De artikelen zijn bedoeld om een breed publiek van neerlandici te bereiken, hetgeen onder meer impliceert dat behalve naar wetenschappelijke diepgang ook gestreefd wordt naar leesbaarheid.
