Heterotopic pregnancy: incidental finding at laparoscopy after spontaneous abortion
Heterotopic pregnancy is the coexistence of intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancy. Laparoscopy was performed in a woman complaining of abdominal pain, 2 weeks after a spontaneous abortion. During surgery an abdominal implant was discovered and removed. Histological examination showed this to be an abdominal pregnancy. Although the present case was not a life-threatening condition, it is important to be aware of this rare and potentially deadly condition, even in patients who do not present any risk factors for multiple or ectopic gestation.
