ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF BARK OF ALANGIUM SALVIFOLIUM IN
The objective of this study was to verify the traditional claims and evaluate the bark of Alangium salvifolium in organic solvents to screen the antidiabetic activity. The ethanol, and water extracts of Alangium salvifolium bark were obtained and subjected for phytochemical screening and evaluated for their antidiabetic activity in alloxan induced diabetic rats. From the acute toxicity study it was observed that ethanol, and aqueous extracts of Alangium salvifolium bark are non-toxic at a fixed dose of 2000 mg/kg. Ethanol and aqueous extracts had exhibited significant (P<0.01) protection and lowered the blood glucose levels in oral glucose tolerance test as well as in alloxan induced diabetic rats with respect to standard metformin (P<0.01). Ethanol extract significantly (P<0.01) restored body weight in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The results of biochemical estimation showed that the ethanol extract was most active in normalizing the blood serum parameters pertaining to liver function test, an attempt was also made to see that is there any correlation between the active extract and metformin significantly (P<0.01). The study results suggested that Alangium salvifolium bark possess potential anti-diabetic activity.
