Operative treatment for recurrent dislocation of temporomandibular joint.

Recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint is an infrequent but disabling condition. Surgical treatment is the only therapy of practical value in a well established condition. Of the multiple surgical procedures available, we believe that partial section of the insertion of the external pterygoid muscle with meniscectomy is a relatively simple, reliable procedure. This was proposed originally by Boman in 1949. A case is presented with five years' follow-up. No recurrence has occurred up to the time of writing, and the clinical result is considered good. The surgical technique and aftercare are described.
