The ecological approach focuses on the conditions favoring human development, which is considered here in terms of perception and activity (Bateson, 1936). More specifically, she studies the interrelationships within any structural coupling “subject–environment– artifact” (Guérin, 2012) and seeks to identify “second-order effects” that can potentially influence the development of the subject. The purpose of this article is to show the relevance of the ecological approach of Bronfenbrenner (1979) which offers a relevant epistemological framework in particular to interpret the continuous behavior of the subject, beyond the micro–system studied. Scientific and methodological issues will be addressed in terms of training engineering.
