The research was based on documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. We found that the state’s socio-educational system seeks to implement institutional standards produced by the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) and the National System for Socio-Educational Care (Sinase). Nonetheless, the values that it intends to follow seem disconnected from the practices historically established in the internment units, prevailing punitive perspectives. Formally, the socio-educational system in Minas Gerais follows gender policies, but these are far from the routines developed in the units.
