Web of Science’tan Çıkarılan Türkiye Adresli Dergiler Üzerine Bir Araştırma
The inclusion of a journal and its articles in the indexes is a subject that is generally given importance by academia in the process of scholarly communication. This situation become even more significant with various implementations in some countries. Turkey is among the countries, which consider the presence of more journals in various indexes, especially the Web of Science (WoS), as an added value or even a quality indicator. It is observed from the current practices that, the quantity has become increasingly important and having publications in the journals covered by citation indexes has sometimes been accepted as a “sine qua non”. In this context, this research aims to investigate the Turkey-addressed journals that are included in WoS, had been indexed for a certain period of time, but dropped from the index after a while. The data set of the study consist of Turkey-addressed journals in WoS that were indexed and dropped between 2005 and 2015. During this period, it was determined that 14 out of 80 Turkey-addressed journals that were indexed in WoS were removed from the index. These dropped 14 journals were able to remain in the citation index for an average of five years. Some of Turkey-addressed journals that were removed from WoS draw the attention with high rates of self-citations and with noteworthy differences in the number of publications from year to year. For half of the Turkey-addressed journals (7 journals) that were dropped from WoS, the ratio of Turkey-addressed publications to total publications is above 90%. This finding reveal the localness of authors in the mentioned journals. If Turkey-addressed journals want to be a part of or permanent in citation indexes, bring the quality of the content to the forefront and target the transition from locality to internationality, it is considered that they will be able to contribute to scientific progress.
