These rare malignant tumors were first described in 1942 and originate from pericytes located around capillaries. They can therefore originate from anywhere in the body. They may be confused with primary renal cell carcinoma when they metastasize to the kidneys. Surgical management remains the mainstay of treatment for renal involvement.
