The mention of a sacred prostitute appears in the book of Genesis, chapter 38, referring to Tamar, daughter-in-law of the patriarch Judah. From this source the idea of this article is to understand what it is the phenomenon of sacred prostitution in this context of the Old Fertile Crescent and reflect on why this practice appears in a narrative attributed to the Hebrew people. This discussion will be done through the analyses of Genesis, chapter 38 in conjunction with other Old Testament texts, as well as with archaeological sources of the context in question. Through these analyzes it was possible to realize that the phenomenon that is now conventionally translated or denominated “Sacred Prostitution” consists of a variety of practices that were present in sacred and ritualistic contexts, involving sexual intercourse and the worship of goddesses with attributes related to sexuality and fertility.
