Visualizing Population in History: The Example of Population and Rural Industry in Southeastern France
The author describes the use of computer map-making programs to develop contour maps illustrating demographic and economic data. Data concerning rural industrialization and the population shifts that occurred with the expansion of the silk industry in the French province of Isere in the late nineteenth century are used to demonstrate the process.
