Victorian women, gender and identity in the South African
War: An overview

In the latter decades of the nineteenth century the role of women in Britain and the
settler societies throughout the British Empire was as yet heavily circumscribed.
Gender studies and scholarly research into the links between gender and imperialism
have blossomed since the 1980s and these have shown that Victorian women did
have some limited agency, but that this was just beginning to develop and mature at
about the time of the outbreak of the South African War (Anglo Boer War) of 1899?
