Slow maxillary expansion in adult patients: a pilot study
Objectives
Aim of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of slow maxillary expander (SME) in the correction of transversal deficiency of the maxilla in adult patients, focusing on: arch width, amount of dento-alveolar tipping, clinical crown heights and changes in the palatal vault.
Materials and methods
This study was conducted on a sample of 16 patients (average age 31.6 years) in permanent dentition. Criteria for inclusion in the study are: non growing patients, availability of dental study models pre (T0) and post treatment (T1).
Results
Molar tipping is slightly reduced at the end of treatment (−1°) and alveolar processes tipping is increased (+2°). Expansion of upper arch was found with non clinical effects on periodontum.
Conclusions
The study shows that the SME can be regarded as an efficient device and an helpful alternative in the treatment of the transverse maxillary deficiency in adults, giving increased space in premolar area, minimum molar tipping, expansion of alveolar processes and non clinical negative effects on periodontum.
