The Crassula atropurpurea complex from the southern and south-eastern Cape, a revised approach

Summary: Crassula atropurpurea (Haw.) Dietr. is a complex species with six currently recognised varieties. Subsequently a new species belonging to this complex, C. werneri N.H.G.Jacobsen was described from the Eastern Cape and C. smutsii Schönland formerly a synonym of C. a. var. atropurpurea reinstated to species level. Due to the number of forms incorporated within C. a. var. atropurpurea, most of which were found to be sympatric, a review of the complex focussing mainly on the latter was undertaken. This has resulted in the delimitation of C. atropurpurea, the resurrection of C. clavifolia Harv. to species status and the description of three previously undescribed taxa, one of which is considered to be related to C. purcellii. It is also proposed that the remaining varieties formerly incorporated within C. atropurpurea sensu lato be re-instated to species level until such time as their relationship to each other can be established. Zusammenfassung: Crassula atropurpurea (Haw.) Dietr. ist ein Artkomplex mit sechs derzeit anerkannten Varietäten. Im Weiteren wurde eine neue zu diesem Komplex gehörende Art, C. werneri N.H.G.Jacobsen, aus dem Ostkap beschrieben und C. smutsii Schönland, früher ein Synonym von C. atropurpurea var. atropurpurea, wieder auf Artrang anerkannt. Aufgrund der Anzahl der zu C. atropurpurea var. atropurpurea gehörenden Formen, von denen die meisten sympatrisch vorkommen, wurde eine Überprüfung des Komplexes durchgeführt, die sich hauptsächlich auf Letztere konzentrierte. Im Ergebnis führte das zur Abtrennung von C. atropurpurea, zur Wiederanerkennung von C. clavifolia Harv. auf Artrang und zur Beschreibung von drei bisher unbeschriebenen Taxa, von denen eines als mit C. purcellii verwandt angesehen wird. Es wird auch vorgeschlagen, die verbleibenden Varietäten, die früher in C. atropurpurea sensu lato eingeschlossen waren, wieder auf Artrang einzusetzen, bis ihre Verwandtschaft zueinander ermittelt werden kann.
