«El duelo es una necesidad de los tiempos presentes»: opiniones sobre el carácter civilizador del duelo en la España del siglo XIX

espanolA lo largo del siglo XIX algunos escritores y juristas defendieron la practica del duelo porque veian en el un mecanismo para mantener el respeto al individuo en una sociedad cambiante y con tendencias igualitarias. Desde su perspectiva, el duelo ayudaba a controlar el egoismo materialista y la falta de civismo de las clases ascendentes, a la vez que insuflaba en la sociedad unos principios morales en trance de desaparicion. El objetivo de este trabajo se centra en el analisis de los argumentos esgrimidos por estos autores para ver hasta que punto responden a una reinterpretacion del concepto del honor en cuyo centro se hallaria una vision elitista de la sociedad. EnglishThroughout the nineteenth century some writers and jurists defended the duel because they saw in it a mechanism to maintain the respect for the individual in a changing society with egalitarian tendencies. From their perspective, the duel helped to control the materialistic selfishness and the lack of civility of the ascending classes, while also inflating into society moral principles that were being lost. The objective of this work focuses on the analysis of the arguments put forward by these authors to see to what extent they respond to a reinterpretation of the concept of honour which have its core in an elitist concept of society.
