«...si civitas Reatina inter duas aquas natare proposuit...». Un difficile equilibrio tra stato della Chiesa e regno di Napoli (secoli XIV-XV)

ITALIANO: Il testo analizza la storia politica di Rieti tra XIV e XV secolo nei suoi rapporti con lo stato della Chiesa e il regno di Napoli. La continua ridefinizione delle strategie dei poteri sovraordinati, che si confrontarono per tutto il medioevo nell’area reatina, ha costretto la citta a dover agire di conseguenza nel tentativo di conservare spazi di autonomia decisionale. Delineato il quadro territoriale, istituzionale, sociale e delle lotte di fazioni interne alla citta, il contributo esamina i metodi di intervento da parte delle autorita pontificia e regnicola, attraverso la negoziazione con la comunita e in particolare con la famiglia Alfani, che esercito la signoria sulla citta, fino a giungere al controllo diretto sulle istituzioni cittadine da parte di Martino V. / ENGLISH: The essay analyses the political history of Rieti in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in its relations with the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. The continuous redefinition of strategies by superordinate powers, which confronted each other throughout the Middle Ages in the Rieti area, forced the city to act in order to keep a certain room for manoeuvre in decision-making. After an outline of the territorial, institutional, and social framework, and of the struggles between factions within the city, the contribution focuses on the ways in which papal and royal authorities intervened in Rieti. This was done both by negotiating with the community, and in particular with the Alfani family – who held the lordship of the city; and by achieving full control over urban institutions during the pontificate of pope Martin V.
