Night Ankle Cast for Nocturnal Pain Due to Fibular Nerve Involvement (After Clinical Diagnosis)
The night ankle-foot cast in plantar flexion is used in the treatment of nocturnal pain of fibular nerves. Twentyfive patients were observed (27 feet) after clinical diagnosis. A profile X-ray of the foot and an ultrasonography or an MRI of the foot were practiced. There are five cases with fibular superficial nerve (SPN) involvement, four cases with medial branch of the deep fibular nerve (MDPN) involvement, and 13 cases with association of SPN and MDPN involvements. The compression was observed on 13 feet due to a tarsal arthritis, on 4 feet due to a tarsal synovial cyst, and on 2 feet due to an os intermetatarseum. On 3 feet, imaging did not show any compression. For 3 feet, the cast was not tolerated. Two patients were lost of view. The improvement of the nocturnal pain with the ankle cast was good or very good on 19/22 feet.

The journal Médecine et Chirurgie du Pied was founded in 1984 under the impetus of Dr Simon Braun, who was its editor-in-chief until 1997. It is the official organ of the French Society of Medicine and Surgery of the Foot. After 17 years it is entering upon a new existence with a change of publisher. The French Society of medicine and Surgery of the Foot was founded in 1969 by Professor Paul Galmiche. The multidisciplinary nature of this Society does not allow isolation within one own specialty, rather to share ideas in order to understand a pathology as complex as that of the foot. This journal is the organ of expression of all those interested in the food and its pathology, both in France and abroad.
