Limited research attention has been dedicated to understanding this public health problem among African American youth and emerging adults. The objective of this paper is to describe the characteristics of the prior rape experiences of African American emerging adults living in an urban area in Georgia. This study summarized findings from qualitative interviews and survey data from a National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded pilot study. Findings from this study reveal that 33% (survey) and 20% (interview) of participants in samples reported ever being raped.
