Vingt années de recherches à Oedenburg (Biesheim et Kunheim, Haut-Rhin) : un bilan

EnglishThis article reviews the research carried out by a French, Swiss and German team at the Oedenburg site (Biesheim and Kunheim, Haut-Rhin, France) since 1998. As most of these works have been published in three monographs, the aim here is to place this site in its environmental, archaeological and historical context and to guide the reader through the available bibliography. Located on the banks of the Rhine, opposite the former abandoned oppidum of Breisach, Oedenburg appeared in the first decade AD and developed under Tiberius around a military camp. The civil agglomeration that emerged during that period went on to have a long life, even after the soldiers left in 1970. Its existence is indeed attested until at least the beginning of the 5th c., despite a temporary decline towards the end of the 3rd c. In the middle of the 4th c., a new and important fortification once again protected this area of the Rhine border. Contrary to common opinion, it is not certain that it is the Argentovaria agglomeration. francaisCet article dresse le bilan des recherches menees par une equipe francaise, suisse et allemande sur le site d’Oedenburg (Biesheim et Kunheim, Haut-Rhin, France) depuis 1998. Ces travaux ayant ete, pour leur plus grande part, publies dans trois monographies, il s’agit ici de replacer ce site dans son contexte environnemental, archeologique et historique et d’orienter le lecteur dans la bibliographie disponible. Situe au bord du Rhin, en face de l’ancien oppidum de Breisach, abandonne, Oedenburg apparait dans la premiere decennie apr. J.-C. et se developpe sous Tibere autour d’un camp militaire. L’agglomeration civile qui emerge alors aura une longue vie, meme apres le depart des soldats, en 70. Son existence est en effet attestee jusqu’au debut du ve s. au moins, malgre une deprise temporaire vers la fin du iiie s. Au milieu du ive s., une nouvelle et importante fortification protege de nouveau ce secteur de la frontiere rhenane. Contrairement a une opinion courante, il n’est pas certain qu’il s’agisse de l’agglomeration d’Argentovaria.
