People obstinately hold on to their ideological positions because they give them power. The world-famous Czech author Milan Kundera, who was a communist until the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, is one of the subjects of such intractable culture wars, currently raging in the Czech Republic. The conflict about Kundera was deepened in June 2020 with the publication of a highly critical, 900-page ‘biography’ of Milan Kundera by another Czech fiction writer, former emigré to the United States Jan Novák.
