Each of the authors featured here has generously contributed their own perspective, knowledge, and professional expertise. Their articles not only illustrate traditional approaches to historical preservation, but also focus attention on the need for practical training through internships, practicums, and other programs. This leads to a discussion about best practices for keeping the profession alive and meaningful for future generations of archivists and those who have need of their services. In his retrospective analysis of the parallels between public history and traditional archival training entitled, “Reflections on Public History and Archives Education,” Peter Wosh, emeritus Director of the Archives and Public History program at New York University, provides a look back at the curricular methods used in both areas of study over the years. Nicole Milano shares with us her research on community programing initiated by the American Field Service in honor of the “Great War,” a major event in global history that lies at the center of her study. Her article, “The Volunteers: Americans Join World War I, 1914–1919 Curriculum: Commemorating the Past and Celebrating the Future,” shows how this educational program offers a structured and interactive means of creating awareness while commemorating an oft-forgotten event in the annals of 20th century America. This initiative would not have been possible if not for the use of unique primary source materials. Among the successful results include easily accessed resources including a lesson plan, informational book, special forums, and continued volunteer opportunities.
